James Patchett ’98
CEO, Public Servant, and Professor
James Patchett is the Chief Executive Officer of A&E Real Estate, a New York City-based real estate investment and asset management firm.

At A&E, James oversees operations, investments, financing, capital programs, and dispositions.

Prior to joining A&E in 2021, James was appointed President and CEO of the NYC Economic Development Corporation by the Mayor of New York City. At EDC, he ran a portfolio of over 60 million square feet of real estate, managed $10 billion in development and infrastructure projects, and helped establish New York City as an innovation hub in life sciences, fintech, cyber security, and green energy.

During his tenure at EDC, he oversaw a component of the City’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including partnerships with the biotech community to manufacture millions of pieces of life-saving Personal Protective Equipment for healthcare workers and to establish a first-of-its-kind Pandemic Response Lab, which has since processed millions of COVID tests.

James previously spent seven years, most recently as Vice President, in the Urban Investment Group of Goldman Sachs investing equity and debt in real estate projects across the U.S. In addition, James served as Chief of Staff to the Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development for the City of New York and as a consultant on energy and environmental issues at NERA Economic Consulting.

He holds a BA in Economics from Amherst College and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business. Over the years, James has received numerous awards for his public service and was named to the Crain’s New York Business 40 Under 40.

Currently, James is a board member of the Prospect Park Alliance and an adjunct professor of real estate at Columbia Business School.
