  • Upper School Science - Biology

    The School
    The Miami Valley School (MVS).  Our mission is to challenge young people of promise to become self-sustaining learners and compassionate global citizens.  For almost 60 years, MVS has provided a unique learning option for families in the Dayton, Ohio, community. Equally important is our commitment to Social Emotional Learning (SEL), through which our students learn the skills and competencies necessary to navigate an ever-shifting world with confidence and curiosity.     The Role
    MVS is seeking an upper school biology teacher committed to developing critical and creative thinkers who collaborate and communicate effectively using evidenced-based argumentation.  This new faculty member will be joining a department that strives to celebrate the diversity of the MVS community through its differentiated instruction, offers assessments that provide a range of opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning, and integrates coursework with other academic departments and the world at-large. The Science Department takes its charge of inculcating a deep fidelity to  Scientific Methods as the fundamental paradigm of rigorous inquiry. The new faculty member should be dedicated to developing curricula that are culturally-inclusive, rich in relevance to the experiences of students, and rooted in immersive laboratory work.

In your role teaching at MVS, you will work alongside dedicated faculty who have taught and learned all over the world and in a variety of school contexts. Your colleagues are artists, researchers, entrepreneurs, published authors, professional musicians, armed services veterans, and thespians. Most importantly, they are compassionate and caring educators committed to lifelong learning.
    • And of course, you will get to Teach! As an upper school Biology teacher, you will teach 2-3 sections of 9th grade Biology I, 1 section of  Advanced Biology II, and occasionally term-long electives.
     
    Expectations

    • Demonstrate a deep belief that teachers have a unique role in empowering students to become passionately inquisitive; 
    • Demonstrate a teaching proficiency and comfort with a variety of teaching methods and learning needs; most importantly supporting immersive, experiential learning;
    • Foster the belief in each of our students, that students can and will change the world
    • Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning through engagement in ongoing professional development;
    • Build collaborative partnership with students, faculty, and parents;
    • Develop and facilitate culturally inclusive curricula and inclusive classroom practices;
    • All faculty can expect to travel with students (grades 4-12) for 1-2 weeks per year;
    • This is primarily an upper school position, but based upon yearly enrollment could be asked to teach in the middle school or support Immersion Term in a different division.
     
    Primary Responsibilities
    • Teach 2-3 sections of 9th grade Biology, 1 section of Biology II, and occasionally term long Anatomy electives;
    • Lead/Co-lead an Immersion program in January
    • Develop and propose new courses each year, including new Immersion programs
    • Update Blackbaud, MVS’ Student Information System (SIS), and Canvas, MVS’ Learning Management Software (LMS), regularly to keep both students and families informed about student progress and performance
    • Write recommendation letters for seniors applying to college
    • Attend faculty meetings (most often held on Wednesday afternoons)
    • Fulfill all other faculty responsibilities that may occur outside the school day, including writing reports and planning, chaperoning student events, attending school-related functions, which include but are not limited to: Caregiver Information Night, Immersion Information Night, Immersion Open House, Aries Colloquium, Academic Awards, and Graduation.
    •  Serve as an advisor for a group of 10-12 students
    • Lead and/or advise extracurricular activities, which include student clubs and athletics;
    • Report to the Upper School Division Director; 
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications
    • Possess a desire to work with pre-teen and teenage students in an experiential setting;
    • Ideal candidates will possess prior experience teaching science in middle and/or upper school settings, advising clubs, coaching athletics, and/or leading student travel learning programs;
    • Undergraduate or advanced degree(s) in Biology, or other related degree; 
    • Candidates without prior teaching experience will also be considered.

    The Role
    MVS is seeking an innovative and culturally inclusive upper school mathematics teacher and advisor committed to developing inquisitive, critical thinkers, focused on understanding the ‘why’  behind mathematical principles versus the ‘how’ of following a formula. The Upper School Mathematics Teacher must be a passionate and skillful teacher, who is eager to invest her/his talents in our upper school mathematics program. They must establish a supportive and engaging environment for upper school students (grades 9-12), demonstrate the ability to create developmentally appropriate curricula, work collaboratively with colleagues and parents, have excellent communication skills, and demonstrate teaching proficiency and comfort with a variety of different teaching and learning styles. In addition, this teacher will have completed coursework or possess teaching experience in specific subfields of mathematics (e.g., statistics and probability, computer science, calculus, etc.) related to her/his teaching responsibilities.

  • Facilities Team Member - Nights

    Title: Facilities Team Member - Nights

    The School

    The Role
    The Facilities Team Member will help the school and community by performing duties assigned by the Director of Facilities and Grounds.
     
    Primary Responsibilities
      • Maintain current facilities processes, work with the Director of Facilities and Grounds and develop new processes as appropriate.
      • Performs daily cleaning and inspections of the facilities.
      • Works directly with the Director of Facilities and Grounds to address any issues by using approved vendors to perform repairs or maintenance outside or the scope and/or capabilities of the MVS Facilities staff.
      • With the assistance of the facilities team, perform preventative maintenance on facility and grounds equipment.
      • Empty trash receptacles, sweep and dust classrooms, common areas and administration offices.
      • Provides facilities support to campus events (setups and teardowns) as needed.
      • Collaborates with divisional leadership to understand the special needs of each and maintain quality support towards the mission and needs of the campus.
      • Work with the Director of Facilities and Grounds to develop and execute strategy for operations of the facilities.
      • Clean and mop steps in the building 
      • Performs carpet cleaning through the facility.  
      • Shared responsibility of cleaning and maintaining the Rose Gallery, Cleary Gallery and The Lofino athletic center.
      • Cross train with day shift positions  
      • Focus on continuous improvements of the campus
      • Performs  audits of the building, providing written or verbal feedback to The Director of Facilities and Grounds.
      • Operate mechanical floor cleaners, polishers and vacuums
      • Fill in for other facilities positions as needed.
      • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Physical Requirements & Work Environment
    • Frequently lift equipment and materials weighing 50 pounds or more.
    • Crawl, climb ladders, twist, turn and reach in completing a variety of job duties.
    • Work outside in hot or cold conditions for extended periods of time.
    • Work in a wide variety of environments as found in all areas of the school.

    Qualifications
    • At least 1 year of janitorial experience in a school setting (preferred)
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Must be able to pass a BCI & FBI background check

    Working Environment:  
    The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being of students. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside, with the exceptions of outdoor recess.
     
    Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; walk and stand. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to be able to hear conversations in quiet environments.

    The Role
    MVS is seeking a responsible and reliable school bus driver to transport students to field trips and athletic events, while ensuring their safety. The school bus driver’s responsibilities include ensuring proper vehicle maintenance, observing safety and traffic rules, and maintaining order among students while they are on the bus.
     
    The Opportunity
    To be successful as a school bus driver, you should enjoy working with children and strictly observe passenger transport regulations. Ultimately, a top-notch school bus driver should be meticulous when it comes to vehicle inspections and regard passenger safety as the highest priority.
     
    School Bus Driver Responsibilities:
     
    • Being attentive to traffic and weather conditions and ensuring passenger safety.
    • Following the planned route and schedule for departure times and stops.
    • Regularly checking vehicle safety such as tires, brakes, turn signals, mechanical equipment, etc.
    • Monitoring and reporting fuel consumption, mileage, and passenger numbers.
    • Reporting delays, accidents, and emergencies.
    • Responding to emergency and non-emergency situations.
    • Inspecting the vehicle thoroughly before and after each trip.
    • Assisting with the loading and unloading of the bus when required.
    • Enforcing conduct and safety rules on the bus.
    • Maintaining a clean vehicle.
    School Bus Driver Requirements:
     
    • High school diploma/GED preferred.
    • CDL license required.
    • Passenger and school bus endorsement required.
    • Clean driving record.
    • Previous experience as a bus driver.
    • Experience working with children is preferred.
    • Working knowledge of first aid procedures.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    NOTE: criminal background check and T8 physical required for hire
